Protecting What Matters
South Africa’s wild spaces are under pressure. Poaching continues to threaten our rhinos, river systems shift under environmental strain, and iconic fish species like tigerfish and yellowfish need protection grounded in science rather than sentiment. The Khulisa Conservation Fund, powered by Mavungana Flyfishing, exists to meet these challenges head‑on. This is conservation built on action, not slogans—field‑tested, audited, and driven by people who spend their lives on the water and in the wild.
Standing with the
Anti‑Poaching Units
Real Support for the KNP Rangers on the Frontline
Rhino conservation demands more than awareness. It requires equipment, training, and unwavering support for the men and women who walk into danger every day. Through the Khulisa Conservation Fund, Mavungana Flyfishing provides direct, practical assistance to a specialised Anti‑Poaching Unit operating in and around the Kruger National Park. The support is precise and purposeful: trained working dogs capable of tracking poachers, body armour and tactical webbing built for harsh terrain, night‑vision optics for after‑dark operations, and gunshot wound kits and emergency medical supplies. Every item is requested, audited, and delivered with intent. It’s support that keeps rangers safer, faster, and more effective—because protecting rhinos requires more than good intentions
Mavungana Flyfishing has always believed that great angling and great conservation are inseparable. The Khulisa Conservation Fund is the formal expression of that belief, bringing together anglers, scientists, rangers, and communities under one purpose: protect what makes our waters extraordinary. Funds raised through events like the Winter One Fly, along with donations and sponsorships, are fully audited and channelled directly into conservation projects. No fluff. No detours. Just impact.
Fish Conservation & Tagging
Science‑Driven Protection for South Africa’s Iconic fish
Healthy rivers don’t happen by accident. They are sustained through research, monitoring, and long‑term commitment. Our fish conservation work focuses on understanding the species that define our flyfishing culture, especially tigerfish. Through Khulisa, Mavungana Flyfishing has funded and supported tagging programmes on Lake Jozini in the Pongola River system and on the Lower Orange River in the Richtersveld, alongside collaborative research with the University of Mpumalanga and anti‑poaching patrols on both systems. More than 188 tigerfish have been tagged, with a 4.7% recapture rate—an invaluable dataset revealing movement patterns, growth rates, and population health. This is the kind of information that shapes future conservation decisions and keeps our river systems thriving. It’s meticulous work, slow work, and exactly the kind of work that matters
